Is grid trading profitable? Real 6-month BTC results.
Every grid bot website shows a green number. Very few show the full picture. So we ran our own bot's code on the last 6 months of real Bitcoin prices and published everything, including the part that doesn't look good.
The test
- Period: 20 April 2026 → 17 October 2026 (180 days)
- Capital: $5,000
- Settings: Balanced: 0.5% step, 5 levels (buy 0.5% lower, sell 0.5% higher)
- Prices: real BTCUSDT 15-minute candles
- Fees: 0.1% on every buy and every sell
- Code: the same code that runs the live bot, not a simplified model
The results
| Version | Result | Profit taken | Trades | Worst dip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grid bot, no stop loss | +$460 (+9.2%) | $457 | 155 | −26.8% |
| Grid bot, 10 levels | +$418 (+8.4%) | $413 | 284 | −25.8% |
| Grid bot, 8% stop loss | −$53 (−1.1%) | $280 | 95 | −6.9% |
| Just holding BTC | +$471 (+9.4%) | — | — | −30.2% |
What these numbers really mean
1. The bot roughly matched holding BTC, with smaller drops
+9.2% vs +9.4% is almost the same. The difference is how the money was made: holding BTC only pays if you sell at the right moment. The grid bot took profit 155 times, small amounts each time, and turned $457 into real USDT before the period even ended.
2. The stop loss hurt in this period
In May, BTC fell more than 8% below the grid. The version with a stop loss sold everything at a loss and stopped. BTC then recovered, and the bot wasn't there for it. Final result: −1.1%. A stop loss protects you in a long crash, but in a dip that recovers it locks in the loss.
3. More levels doesn't mean more profit
10 levels made almost twice as many trades (284 vs 155) but less profit. Each trade was smaller, and the fees (0.2% per round trip) took a bigger share. More trades is not the goal; net profit is.
4. The honest part: the −27% dip
Without a stop loss, the bot holds the BTC it bought while the price falls. At the worst moment, a $5,000 account was worth about $3,660 on paper. It recovered, but only because BTC recovered. If you can't watch your account drop 25–30% without panic selling, a grid bot without a stop loss is not for you.
When grid trading is profitable, and when it isn't
- Best: BTC moves up and down in a range. Every bounce becomes a completed trade.
- OK: slow trend with daily swings. The bot still catches the swings.
- Weak: strong rally without pullbacks. The bot sells early and keeps only small profits.
- Hard: long crash. The bot ends up holding BTC and has to wait for a recovery.
So, is it worth it?
If you already believe in BTC long term and you like the idea of taking small real profits from its daily swings, a spot grid bot is a calm, simple tool. Start with virtual money, look at your own backtest, and only use money you can leave in BTC for a long time.
